Oral manifestations of systemic disease are varied and can closely resemble local oral pathology. With an aging population, these conditions are becoming more common, and general dentists play a crucial role in early recognition. This session offers an overview of key presentations, strategies to aid identification, and practical approaches for safe management in everyday practice.

Aims:

  • To provide an accessible overview of the clinical presentations and underlying mechanisms of oral manifestations of systemic disease and drug reactions.
  • To enhance confidence in recognising and managing these conditions in general dental practice.
  • To emphasise the importance of early recognition of oral signs as a pathway to improving patient safety, diagnosis, and timely referral.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify common oral manifestations associated with systemic disease and adverse drug reactions.
  • Explain the underlying pathogenesis of these oral presentations in a clinically relevant way.
  • Apply practical strategies for managing these conditions in general dental practice, including recognising when referral is appropriate.

Rob is now undertaking specialist training in oral medicine, where his focus is in managing complex oral mucosal disease, salivary gland pathology and facial pain. Alongside his clinical responsibilities, he teaches undergraduate students and continues to publish research that informs practice.
